Search & Rescue

From the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office:
On 4/420 at approximately 6:00 P. M., Deputies responded by boat to the upper end of the slack water on Dworshak Reservoir for a report of a boat stuck on the rocks and taking on water. While in route deputies learned the 1992 Weldcraft Jet boat owned and operated by David D. Hardin, 50, of Lewiston Idaho was approximately two to four miles past the end of the of the slack water on the fast running waters of the Northfork of the Clearwater River. Hardin and his three passengers, Nicholas E. Leyffert, 40 of West Lafayette Indiana, Charlie Ramirez, 49 of Houston Texas, and Szean Wanaka, 36 of Orofino Idaho had to swim to shore in the 35 to 40 degree water. They were able to start a fire and contact the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office with a radio Wanka had as he is a member of the Sunnyside Rural Fire Department. Deputies were unable to get to Hardin's location due to the fact of shallow, swift running water and darkness making it impossible to navigate. The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office contacted Two Bear Air who assisted by rescuing the four people and transporting them by helicopter to Grandad boat launch where deputies gave them a ride via boat back to their vehicle at Big Eddy boat launch. All four men were cold but sustained no injuries and the boat is going to be recovered by a private party.
